There are some people who are born with that green thumb that everybody talks about. The rest of us…not a chance. Along with their fabled green thumb comes a knowledge of plants and flowers that the rest of us could never begin to understand…or want to.
And yet, when it comes time to plan your wedding flowers, especially if you have planned an autumn wedding, you have no idea where to start. Ok, you know about azaleas and roses, but that is only going to help you with the roses. They bloom all year round, but unless you have the budget necessary to fund an all rose wedding, you are going to need some help.
Believe me, finding someone to help you select your autumn wedding flowers is a lot easier than growing them. Most people know someone who was born to grow flowers. When yours are wilting, theirs are standing tall and proud, and multiplying like crazy. Instead of being green with envy, you need to realize she would be a great person to talk to.
Ask her what flowers are beautiful in the autumn. Make a list. While you are talking and getting her sage advice (pun, intended) take down information about their color. Even better, have her show you what they look like if she has any flower magazines or books. You will be overjoyed at the array.
Beautiful flowers do not grow only in the spring. Autumn flowers tend to be the colors we associate with fall, and they are the reason for it. They flourish in colors of beautiful orange, sienna, and gold. You will be amazed at how many autumn flowers you do not know about, but find perfect.
Your whites and reds are available to you too. Roses are not the only red flower. You just thought they were. Gerbera daisies come in gorgeous colors. Reds, oranges, pinks, and yellows…and that is just one flower.
How about carnations? Everybody loves carnations. They bloom in autumn in a show of enticing shades. A carnation can bloom in any color a Gerbera daisy can. Mixing the colors and flowers would be a great idea.
What if you had your heart, and your gowns, planned for that perfect white wedding? No problem. White carnations mixed with baby’s breath can make your wedding flowers that vision in your head you wanted to re-create.
One should never ignore the precious miniature calla lily. With the inviting style of its sophisticated share and the white and its corresponding green foliage, some of the most beautiful of autumn wedding flowers have been a result of the use of the calla lily. They also come in gentle pinks and lavenders if white was not your goal, but soft colors were.
If all else fails, go to your local florist. After all, someone is going to have to do the work and order the flowers. She can probably show you designs and styles she has done before. If you do not like them, find another florist. They are going to be your autumn wedding flowers and her design should make you want to work with her.
