Believe it or not, but wedding cakes have been around for quite some time now. Initially, during Roman times, the groom would take a piece of break made from barley and break the piece over the bride’s head. The tradition signified the dominance of the man over the woman, and some countries in the world still hold that tradition sacred. In most locations around the globe, including Australia, the barley bread was gradually replaced by the wedding cake we have come to love today.
There are certain traditions which involve the wedding cake as well. For example, in most parts of the world, the groom and bride both place their hands on the knife which will cut the first piece of the wedding cake. Then, they’ll proceed to literally feeding each other a piece of cake. Some might act silly and smudge some frosting on the other one’s nose – which is a great shot for your wedding filmmaker.
Most wedding cakes these days come in several layers, usually the bottom being the biggest and becoming smaller as they go up. Some people choose a specific kind of cake for each layer, others go with one kind of the whole cake. When it comes to decorations, you can really go crazy. But in most cases, the bride will make all the cake-related decisions and will probably try to fit it into the general theme of the wedding. Most bakers out there will allow you to try out a wide range of cakes before you decide on a certain flavour. The embellishments will follow suit after that.
On top of the cake, you can have some decorations, or you can have small figurines representing the bride and groom. The top-most layer of cake is usually the bit which the bride and groom take home with them and is not served to the guests at the wedding. Most kinds of cakes can be stored away in the freezer for quite a while and enjoyed at a later date.
One thing, you need to keep in mind, is that you’ll probably need a cake stand in order to display it at the right time and make sure everybody gets to watch you cut that first piece. You can also use some wedding sparklers and dim the lights when you bring out the cake in order to increase the effect and surprise it has on your guests.
Always make sure you contact a baker in due time because those, who know how to create great wedding cakes, are usually booked year-round, so you’ll need to make an appointment well in advance.
