My Unique Wedding – Make Your Day Special

When I got married, I most remember how much fun it was. My husband and I had been engaged forever and I was starting to think we’d never actually tie the knot. It wasn’t cold feet – it was a difference of religious background. It wasn’t that we couldn’t agree on which church to get married in, but it was that our families couldn’t agree.

Then in the late summer of 2002, a friend of ours got married and the manner, in which he got married, solved our problems. His fried was ordained through the Universal Life Church, making him legally able to marry couples who wished to be married.

At the end of August, we decided to get married on Halloween, just two months away! We attempted to contact a few local halls to rent space to have the ceremony, but as you can imagine, everything was already booked for that date. We ended up having the ceremony in the living room of our apartment.

We had never wanted to make a huge deal out of our wedding, with a grand, traditional ceremony. Instead, we invited family and friends to our Halloween Costume Ball/Wedding. As the bride, I wore beautiful white angel wings and a white Princess-style gown. My groom wore bat wings with his outfit. We encouraged our guests to dress up, and they had fun deciding on what to wear to our wedding. Our friend/minister even dressed in costume, as Elvis!

We wrote our vows together just a few minutes before the ceremony, which we both felt was very romantic, as we were caught up in the spirit and excitement of our special day.

The most difficult part of the day proved to be fitting all of our family and friends into one small room! We didn’t need to hire a band as we used our own collection of music to entertain everyone. We didn’t need a caterer, either, for the very informal reception. Our day was special and memorable without months and months of planning. By taking the focus off of extensive planning and expensive frills, we focused more on what the day meant to us.

Not to say that having an extravagant, traditional wedding doesn’t have its merits, but our Halloween wedding was just perfect for us.

The most important thing for us was to make our special day fun for everyone involved, including us. It was not a particularly stressful event for us and we did everything our own way. It was absolutely a memorable event for everyone who was there, and I know we’ll all remember it fondly.
